Christianity and the American Constitution (Part 1)

The efforts by the Democratic Party to destabilize the family in recent decades, which came to a head during the presidency of Joe Biden and the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk in America on September 10th of 2025, have galvanized and accelerated the “Christianization” of America. Christianity is “in vogue” again, with many conversions among popular media figures and surges in church attendance since the death of Charlie Kirk.

There are several hot-button topics within popular Christianity at the moment, which have prophetic significance and are worthy of mention:

This article will focus on the agenda behind Christian Nationalism. There is an increasing movement by leaders across virtually all denominations to “make America Christian again”. There are different flavors of this depending upon who you follow, ranging from Catholic nuances to Evangelical versions, but the core tenet is the same: “We need to reclaim our Christian roots, the government should be informed by our Christian values, and the separation of church and state needs to be abolished to 'save us' from the evils of the Democratic Party and communism.

On its face, there is nothing wrong with government officials, elected and appointed, being informed by Christian values. The devil is in the details, as the expression goes. What is meant by the sentiment that Christianity should inform the government?

The following passage comes to mind as I reflect on this demonization of the left and the rise of the Christian right:

For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 2 Thess 2:7,8 NKJV

The pioneers of Adventism understood that Paul was referring to the historical transition of pagan Rome to Papal Rome and the rise of the Holy Roman Empire. In a sense, history is repeating itself, and as bad as the humanism, gender fluidity, and relativistic morality of the left is, what is coming in the form of Christian nationalism will bring far greater tyranny.

This is not the first time in American history that the legislation of “Christianity” has been attempted.

Being American, I have felt compelled over the past few years to study American history in light of Biblical prophecy, since this nation features prominently in Revelation 13 and 14.

There was a clear attempt in the second half of the 1800s to legislate “Christianity” in an attempt to make the nation moral again, and had it been successful, it would have been a fulfilment of these prophecies. There are lessons for us to draw from this attempt to enforce Christian ideals, falsely so-called, in light of the looming crisis that awaits us all.

That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. Ecc 1:9

The heart of the issue lies in whether governments have the authority to enforce moral standards, and, if they do attempt to enforce them, would this be a good thing?

And Jesus answered and said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at Him. Mark 12:17 NKJV

This was a revolutionary thought that defined the lines of demarcation by which God set the limits of power for the governments of this world. In matters that pertain to God, governments have no authority to interpose. To do so is to invite the nation's eventual ruin, and history proves this.

So what is the legitimate role of government ordained by God?

In seeking to answer that question, I gave a two-part series of presentations at Passover in Morganton, Georgia, during April of this year. I have adapted and applied to our context the writings, predominantly those of A.T. Jones, from his 1889 book, Civil Government and Religion, and several of his 1892 articles in The American Sentinel, with a few supplements from a series of articles by George Fifield in 1892 in The American Sentinel.
